Our Speakers
Michael L. Gernhardt (Ph.D.) NASA Astronaut
Dr. Gernhardt was selected by NASA in March 1992, and reported to the Johnson Space Center in August 1992. His technical assignments include flight software verification in the Shuttle Avionics Integration Laboratory (SAIL), and the development of nitrox diving to support training for both the Hubble Space Telescope repair, and a variety of Space Station EVA developments. He was a member of the astronaut support team at Kennedy Space Center, Florida, responsible for Shuttle prelaunch vehicle checkout and, crew ingress/egress, and a spacecraft communicator (CAPCOM) at Mission Control Center, Houston, during various Shuttle missions. He was also the leader of an international research team that developed a new exercise pre-breathe protocol that improved the safety and efficiency of space walks from the ISS. Dr. Gernhardt presently serves as a member of the astronaut office EVA branch, as well as being a Project Scientist of the EVA Physiology System and Performance Project (EPSP), the Manager of JSC’s Environmental Physiology Laboratory, and Project Manager of the Small Pressurize Rover project.
James Sulikowski (Ph.D.)
Dr. Sulikowski is the Director of Oregon State University’s Coastal Oregon Marine Experiment Station (COMES) and a Professor in the Department of Fisheries, Wildlife, and Conservation Sciences (FWCS). Dr. Sulikowski has master’s degrees in Marine Biology and Physiology, as well as a Ph.D. in Zoology. His interdisciplinary research integrates aspects of physiology and ecology to provide an understanding of how humans and a changing environment affect the movements, and spatial/temporal distribution of sharks in both the coastal and pelagic environments.
Dr. Sulikowski’s 25 years of experience using a variety of techniques, including hormone analyses, electronic tracking, and ultrasound imaging, has resulted in over 120 peer reviewed publications and over $13 million in external grant funding. His work has been featured on such media outlets as the BBC, Discovery Channel’s Shark Week, Nat Geo Wild, the Today Show, and many other local, regional and national affiliates.
